Free Diabetes Programme Launched to Help Manage Type 2 Diabetes
People living with diabetes are being encouraged to sign up for a new free programme designed to offer essential support and guidance. Kernow Health, commissioned by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, has launched “Diabetes and You,” a comprehensive support programme for individuals newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and those already managing the condition.
A Comprehensive Approach to Diabetes Management
“Diabetes and You” provides both face-to-face and virtual sessions in collaboration with local GP practices. These sessions include refresher courses for those needing ongoing support to manage their diabetes and make healthier lifestyle choices. The programme also offers specialist courses tailored for young people with early onset type 2 diabetes and individuals with learning disabilities or autism. Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to participate, recognising the importance of a supportive network.
Wendy, a participant in the programme, shared her experience: “We learn about what we eat and help each other. You’ve got to care for your body because you’re only here once, but life doesn’t end because you’re a diabetic.”
Addressing Serious Complications
Diabetes can lead to severe health complications if not managed properly. These include vision loss, heart disease, stroke, nerve damage resulting in loss of feeling and pain, and foot problems that could lead to amputation. However, with the right knowledge and support, individuals can effectively manage their diabetes and lead fulfilling lives.
Heather Taylor, senior educator for Diabetes and You, emphasised the programme’s approach: “We understand the challenges people face when living with type 2 diabetes. We’re encouraging these patients to start taking ownership of their diabetes. It’s a 2-way journey, 2-way conversation, and 2-way decision making on any changes to their management.”
Encouraging Participation for Better Health
Dr Chris Reid, chief medical officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, highlighted the programme’s importance: “Complications from diabetes can be very serious and we really want to help people with diabetes take healthy steps to reduce their risk of developing a number of serious health problems. I would really encourage people to sign up and learn how they can manage the condition and live a fulfilling life.”
