New £9 Million Outpatient Department Opens at West Cornwall Hospital
A new £9 million Outpatient Department has officially opened at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance, with staff already delivering face-to-face and virtual care in the modern facility.
New facility brings healthcare improvements to the west
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month to mark the completion of the build, which was carried out by construction partner Kier. The event was attended by RCHT Chief Executive Officer Steve Williamson and members of the project team.
The state-of-the-art department has been designed to improve outpatient services for people living in West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It offers a more accessible and patient-focused environment, with features that allow staff to deliver both in-person and virtual appointments.
Steve Williamson said:
“I am delighted the new Outpatient Department has opened at West Cornwall Hospital. We worked tirelessly with our partners in the NHS and with the local community for many years to secure this investment, which is why it is so pleasing to see the unit now built and our committed staff already providing outstanding care to our patients.
I would like to thank the project team for successfully completing construction within a very short time frame, and also thank our many stakeholders, including the League of Friends, and local residents and councillors, who have supported us along this journey.”

Art meets healthcare
As part of the project, the hospital worked with Falmouth University to bring local art into the new space. Final-year illustration students were invited to submit work for an end-of-year module, and their pieces are now displayed throughout the building.
Kate Shields, Chief Executive Officer at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, said:
“The new Outpatient Department at West Cornwall Hospital is a fabulous example of the ways in which we are delivering high-quality health and care services closer to home and the local community.
This new building, with its modern, advanced facilities, made possible by national investment demonstrates the commitment to West Cornwall Hospital, and our commitment to deliver as much NHS treatment as close to where people live as possible.”
Kier celebrates delivery of new department
Doug Lloyd, regional director at Kier Construction, added:
“We’re pleased to have partnered with RCHT to build this new Outpatient Department at West Cornwall Hospital. The completion of this outstanding facility continues our long-standing relationship in building for the Trust and it has been a privilege to deliver another fantastic new facility for the local community in Penzance and the west of Cornwall.”
