New Imaging Technology Improves Cancer Treatment at Royal Cornwall Hospital
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) has introduced HyperSight, an advanced imaging technology that is transforming radiotherapy for cancer patients in Cornwall.
A Leap Forward in Cancer Care
The state-of-the-art software module, funded through the Sunrise Appeal, is now operating with RCHT’s newly upgraded radiotherapy machines. HyperSight captures exceptionally clear images of tumours and surrounding tissue in just 45 seconds, allowing clinicians to plan and deliver treatment with greater speed, safety, and precision.
Installed in September on a brand-new Linear Accelerator (Linac) at the Sunrise Centre, HyperSight marks a significant step forward in local cancer services. Linacs use high-energy X-rays or electron beams to precisely target tumours, destroying cancer cells with millimetre accuracy while minimising damage to healthy tissue.
Faster, Clearer, More Comfortable
Unlike earlier systems, HyperSight enables radiographers to use a full range of imaging options in more detail. Its exceptional image quality and rapid acquisition time mean patients spend less time on the treatment bed.
For breast cancer patients, who must hold their breath during treatment, images can now be taken in just one or two breaths — making the process far more comfortable and less stressful.
Clinical staff can now be even more confident in patient positioning and the precise delivery of radiotherapy. HyperSight also allows clinicians to track changes in a patient’s body over time, tailoring treatment to each person’s evolving needs for more effective care.
Funded by the Sunrise Appeal
A spokesperson for the Sunrise Appeal said:
“The Sunrise Appeal was delighted to be able to fund the £400,000 necessary for this innovative project.
While the NHS provides the essentials, we believe our community deserves even more. That’s why we’re continually working to upgrade standard equipment to the very best available.
This isn’t just about machines – it’s about hope, dignity, and world-class care close to home.”
Cornwall Leads the Way
RCHT is the first organisation in the South West to use HyperSight, setting a new benchmark for cancer treatment in the region.
Nicola Snell, Senior Radiographer at RCHT, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful to the Sunrise Appeal for enabling RCHT to acquire this groundbreaking technology.
HyperSight is already making a real difference to our patients across Cornwall, because the treatment is more comfortable, incredibly accurate and highly efficient. Innovations like these ensure that RCHT continues to strive for and provide outstanding care.”
A second Linear Accelerator, due to arrive at the Royal Cornwall Hospital early next year, will come with HyperSight pre-installed — ensuring even more patients benefit from this transformative technology.
