Cancer can be overwhelming, not only for those diagnosed but also for the professionals who care for them. That’s why Consultant Clinical Oncologists Dr John McGrane and Dr Michael Rowe have launched Simply Oncology, a podcast designed to make cancer care easier to understand through compassionate and accessible conversations.

Breaking Down the Complexities of Cancer Care

Launched in April 2024, the podcast now features nearly 70 episodes, each lasting around 20 to 30 minutes. Simply Oncology explores a wide range of topics, from cancer research and patient experiences to the latest breakthroughs in oncology.

The episodes are divided into two main formats. The ‘Fundamentals’ series focuses on patient-centred discussions around core cancer care topics, while the ‘In the Clinic’ series is aimed at healthcare professionals and those interested in the clinical aspects of oncology.

Expertise Behind the Microphone

John, a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) since 2014, is also the clinical lead for radiotherapy and co-founder of the award-winning MySunrise cancer support app. His co-host Michael, who completed his specialty training in 2024, specialises in urological, upper gastrointestinal, and hepatobiliary cancers.

Together, they bring a shared passion for improving communication in cancer care, helping patients and professionals navigate complex information in a clear, human way.

Empowering Patients Through Digital Support

Listeners have praised Simply Oncology for its clarity, empathy, and educational value, describing it as informative, inspiring, and invaluable. Topics range from chemotherapy and radiotherapy to digital health, the role of clinical nurse specialists, and how oncology letters can better communicate with patients.

The podcast is supported by the MySunrise app, which provides trusted digital tools and information throughout a patient’s cancer journey. By integrating Simply Oncology into the cancer care pathway, patients gain an extra layer of support that is both accessible and deeply personal.

“Engaging and Accessible”

In a joint statement, John and Michael said:

“We have been delighted with the positive feedback about the podcast. We hope that we are delivering topics in a way that is engaging and accessible.”

“We have now had over 1 year of episodes. We have loved the amazing conversations with meaning that our superb guests have brought to the Simply Oncology podcast.”
