Nominate 50 Women of Cornwall for a Major New Art Installation

Art Centre Penryn, Cornwall’s contemporary art centre, is inviting the public to nominate 50 influential ‘Women of Cornwall’ for a major new art installation. The project, in collaboration with ceramic artist Katie Bunnell, aims to celebrate women who have made meaningful contributions to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly—whether they are historical figures, current-day leaders, or even mythical characters.

Submit Your Nomination

The public has until 30 November 2024 to suggest a woman for inclusion via the official nomination page: Women of Cornwall.

“Selecting just 50 of all the amazing women out there with a connection to Cornwall isn’t going to be easy,” according to the Art Centre. The advisory group will include contributions from organisations like Black Voices Cornwall and Access Cornwall, ensuring a diverse representation of women across a broad range of sectors.

The Art Installation

The 50 selected women will be honoured through an extraordinary art installation comprising 50 handmade porcelain plates. Each plate will feature a visual representation by contemporary artists, and the collection will become a permanent feature at Art Centre Penryn.

These plates will not only remain on display at the centre but will also tour other venues, showcasing the significant roles Cornish women have played throughout history. From visual arts, sciences, and literature, to farming, sport, and maritime, no contribution is too small for consideration.

Make Your Suggestion

The organisers are particularly keen to spotlight women who may not have received widespread recognition for their achievements. The Art Centre emphasises that women from all sectors and walks of life should be considered, with nominations open to those in fields such as health, education, politics, and business, to name just a few.

You can submit your suggestion by visiting the Women of Cornwall webpage. For help with historical figures, project partners like Hypatia Trust in Penzance and Kresen Kernow in Redruth are on hand to assist with research.

Funding and Support

The Women of Cornwall project is made possible through funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and is also part-funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
