Two men have been jailed after a violent street attack in Penryn that took place during the school run and left onlookers shocked.

Sentences Handed Down at Truro Crown Court

Nikita Trembath, 32, of Permarin Road in Penryn, and Matthew Cunningham, 41, of Hilgrove Road in Newquay, were sentenced at Truro Crown Court on Friday 5th December.

Nikita had previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and possession of a weapon for the discharge of a noxious liquid, gas or electrical incapacitation device.

Matthew admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.

Matthew was jailed for five years and four months and Nikita for two years and eight months. A restraining order lasting ten years was also put in place.

Brutal Assault Outside the Seven Stars

The court heard that at around 3.45pm on Tuesday 15th July 2025 police received numerous calls from members of the public reporting two men attacking a man and a woman outside the Seven Stars pub in Penryn.

Callers reported the use of several weapons including metal bars, a bottle and a taser. Punches and kicks were also said to have been delivered while the victims lay on the ground.

Officers arrived to find both victims injured in the street. They were taken to hospital. The male victim suffered facial bruising and a fractured nose, while the female victim had a head injury that required stitches.

Nikita and Matthew were found at Nikita’s home later that evening and arrested.

Weapons Discovered and Interviews Conducted

During a search of the property officers found an electric stun gun.

In interview, Nikita admitted much of the violence but claimed it started after what he described as aggression by the victims as he walked past with his daughter.

Police Describe the Severity of the Attack

Officer in the case, DC Richard Haycock said:
“This was an incredibly violent and persistent attack, carried out with weapons, which took place in the middle of a Cornish street at the time of the school run.
It was no doubt terrifying for all those who had the misfortune of being in the area at the time going about their business.
These types of incidents remain rare in our community and we hope the sentence sends out the message that such violence will not be tolerated and has no place on our streets.”
