The literary world turns its attention to Penzance this May as The Morrab Library hosts the inaugural John le Carré Memorial Lecture at the Acorn Theatre.

Celebrated espionage novelist Mick Herron, known for his gripping Slow Horses / Slough House series, is set to feature as the guest speaker in what promises to be a highlight on the literary calendar. Scheduled for Thursday, 2 May 2024, tickets for the much-anticipated event have already sold out, underscoring the enduring appeal of le Carré’s legacy and the genre’s vibrant community.

Honouring a Literary Giant

The lecture serves as a tribute to John le Carré, the pen name of David John Moore Cornwell, who resided in St Buryan, Cornwall, until his passing in 2020. Le Carré’s prolific career spanned over six decades, during which he authored 26 novels and five works of non-fiction. His espionage tales, such as “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” have captivated readers worldwide and seen successful adaptations into films and TV series.

A steadfast supporter and former president of The Morrab Library, John’s contributions to the literary community and his passion for promoting reading among the youth have left an indelible mark. His family’s involvement in the upcoming lecture underscores the personal significance of the event and their commitment to preserving his cultural and literary heritage.

A Biennial Tradition

Sponsored by The Arts Society West Cornwall, the lecture is planned as a biennial event, ensuring that John’s legacy continues to inspire and engage future generations of writers and readers. Mick Herron’s selection as the inaugural speaker reflects the vibrancy and relevance of contemporary espionage literature. His lecture, aptly titled “Running Away with the Circus,” promises insights into the craft of espionage writing and the intricate world-building behind the acclaimed Slow Horses series.

Engaging the Community

The lecture is just one part of a series of events designed to celebrate John’s life and works. A loaned exhibition of his memorabilia is set to take place at Penlee House Gallery & Museum from 17 April to 6 May, offering fans a unique glimpse into his world. Additionally, the local community and literary enthusiasts will have opportunities to engage directly with Mick Herron through various associated events, including a “meet the author” session and a conversation plus book signing at the Edge of the World Bookshop.

A Legacy Continued

The inaugural John le Carré Memorial Lecture not only honours the memory of one of espionage literature’s most iconic figures but also celebrates the genre’s thriving future. With Mick Herron’s participation and the community’s enthusiastic support, the event promises to be a fitting tribute to John’s remarkable life and contributions to literature and culture. As Penzance prepares to welcome literary enthusiasts, John’s spirit and legacy will undoubtedly be felt throughout this commemorative occasion.
