Penlee Lifeboat Assists Injured Fisherman off Penlee Point
RNLI Penlee were tasked late on Tuesday 26th August after Falmouth Coastguard issued an immediate launch request to assist an injured fisherman. The call came at 11pm, reporting a man with a serious head injury aboard a 50ft fishing vessel south east of Penlee Point.
Lifeboat Reaches Vessel in Minutes
Penlee’s all-weather Severn Class lifeboat, the Ivan Ellen, launched under the command of Coxswain Patch Harvey with seven RNLI volunteers on board. Within 12 minutes, they were alongside the fishing vessel.
Two volunteers, including a paramedic, boarded the boat and applied compression bandaging to stem heavy bleeding. The injured fisherman was then transferred to the lifeboat and brought back to Newlyn.
Urgent Drive to Hospital
With no definite time for an ambulance to arrive, two RNLI volunteers took the decision to drive the casualty directly to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. He remained in urgent need of treatment as the bleeding continued.
