Penzance Commemorates 80th Anniversary of VJ Day at Penlee Park
The 80th anniversary of VJ Day was marked in Penzance today, Friday 15th August 2025, with a poignant Service of Commemoration organised by Penzance Council.
A Moment for Remembrance and Peace
The service took place in the peaceful surroundings of the Memorial Garden in Penlee Park, where those gathered reflected on the significance of the day.
Rev. Derath Durkin, who led the service, reminded everyone:
“Today we stand with our nation. It is a time for remembrance, reflection, and a celebration of peace – not a glorification of war.”
Remembering Sacrifice and Peace
Town Clerk of Penzance, James Hardy, opened the service by welcoming attendees to the garden. The Kohima Epitaph was read by Mary Jane Willows, adding to the atmosphere of respect and reflection.
Royal British Legion Tribute
Representing the Royal British Legion, Brian Venn served as the standard bearer for the event. Veteran Robert Bolitho laid a wreath on behalf of the Legion, honouring the memory of those who served and sacrificed during the war.
