St Anthony Gardens in Penzance to Reopen on 15th December

Cornish developer Treveth has confirmed the reopening date for the revamped St Anthony Gardens on Coinagehall Street, marking the first completed phase of its wider town regeneration plan for Penzance.

The gardens will reopen to the public on Monday 15th December, giving people their first chance to explore the upgraded space. Some final elements will follow later as part of the ongoing Coinagehall Street development.

What’s New at St Anthony Gardens

Supported by the Future High Streets Fund under the Government’s Town Fund, Treveth has carried out a series of improvements designed to enhance the space while keeping much of its original character intact.

The work includes repositioning the iconic archway, installing British Standard compliant pathways for inclusive access throughout the gardens, upgrading seating areas with views across Mount’s Bay and Penzance Harbour, creating new open areas for wellbeing activities and events, and installing two boules courts.

Most of the original stone walls have been retained, and biodiverse planting has been added to support wildlife and ensure interest throughout the year. The historic fountain will be restored once water and sewer connections can be made to the updated network for the wider development.

Emma Rodgers, Head of Land and Planning at Treveth, said:
“We’re delighted to announce that St Anthony Gardens will re-open to the public on Monday 15th December. These gardens are much-loved by the community, so we were keen to open them as soon as it was safe and appropriate to do so. While some elements will be completed later alongside the wider Coinagehall Street development, we’re really pleased with how the space is already taking shape. We hope the local community will enjoy the upgraded gardens, and that our improvements will also encourage visitors to the area to help boost the local economy. In particular, we are really looking forward to seeing the planting flourish as we head into spring.”

Emma added:
“Our work doesn’t end here. We will now move onto the next phase of the regeneration project, bringing 36 new homes and seven business units to the former Taylor’s Garage site.”

Next Phase Starts in 2026

Construction of the next phase is due to begin in 2026. It will deliver 36 new homes for local people, including affordable and shared ownership options, as well as open market homes with restrictions on holiday let use. Seven business units will also be created.

Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, said:
“St Anthony Gardens have been re-invented for residents today and future generations, with way better views of the sea, more appropriate planting, a community event space and much better disabled access. The whole town will be pleased when the gardens re-open after a long period of works.”
