Varfell Farms Installs Over 1,000 Solar Panels at Penzance Packhouse

Varfell Farms has installed more than 1,000 solar panels at its new packhouse facility in Penzance, marking one of the largest roof mounted solar installations in the South West.

The installation has been delivered in partnership with CleanEarth and represents a major step forward in the business’s sustainability journey.

Clean energy at scale

The solar system is expected to generate more than 460,000 kWh of electricity each year and reduce Varfell’s carbon footprint by 90 tonnes annually. The company says the move supports its ongoing efforts to cut environmental impact while contributing to the UK’s transition towards net zero.

Simon Gardner, Farms Director at Varfell Farms, said:
“It’s a huge step forward in our mission to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We’re proud to lead the way in sustainable farming and demonstrate that large-scale agriculture can embrace renewable energy solutions.”

Expansion across 6,000 acres

Over the past year, Varfell Farms has expanded its operations to cover 6,000 acres and has introduced a new packhouse, dispatch area and cold storage facilities. The developments are designed to improve efficiency while maintaining a focus on innovation and sustainability within the horticultural sector.

Environmental recognition

Varfell Farms is already recognised for its environmental approach. In 2023, the business became a LEAF Demonstration Farm, showcasing regenerative farming practices and biodiversity. The company is also described as a leader in Cornwall’s net zero charge.

In 2025, Varfell Farms was named Supermarket Floral and Plant Supplier of the Year at the FPC Awards.

A long Cornish history

Founded in 1885, Varfell Farms produces more than 500 million hand picked daffodils each year, processes over 13,000 tonnes of bulbs and supplies 2 million stems of summer flowers annually to major retailers. The business operates on over 6,000 acres of Cornish land and forms part of the greosn group.
