First Adder of the Season Spotted
The first adder of the season has been seen basking in the sunshine near Pendeen Lighthouse, according to Friends of Portheras Cove.
With adders becoming more active in the spring and early summer, dog owners are being urged to stay cautious while walking in the area.
Why Adders Are a Risk to Dogs
Adders are the UK’s only venomous snake, and while they are not aggressive, they may bite in self-defence—particularly if a curious dog gets too close. Their venom is at its most potent after hibernation, making bites more severe at this time of year.
Signs of an adder bite in dogs:
- Swelling, often on the face or legs
- Two small puncture wounds at the bite site
- Pain, yelping, or signs of distress
- Lameness, bruising, or bleeding
- Weakness or nervous behaviour
Adder bites are rarely fatal but can cause serious illness. Small dogs are particularly at risk, and immediate veterinary attention is crucial.
What to Do If Your Dog Is Bitten
If you suspect your dog has been bitten by an adder:
✅ Seek veterinary help immediately
✅ Carry your dog if possible—this helps slow venom circulation
✅ Keep them calm and still
✅ Bathe the wound in cold water to reduce swelling
Vets typically treat adder bites with pain relief, antihistamines, and sometimes anti-venom to neutralise the toxin.
How to Stay Safe on Walks
- Stick to clear paths and avoid long grass
- Keep dogs on a lead in known adder habitats
- Be aware that adders love to bask in the sun—particularly in heathland, moorland, and coastal paths
Adders are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, meaning it is illegal to harm them. They are naturally shy and will usually slither away when given space.
