St Day AFC Upgrades Needed For Promotion
St Day AFC, a prominent community football club, has submitted a planning application for substantial upgrades to their facilities, aiming to comply with Football Association (FA) requirements and secure promotion to the South West Peninsula League.
The application outlines a series of significant improvements. Key among these is the proposal to add a new shipping container for equipment storage, crucial for maintaining the club’s pitches. This addition will address current security and storage limitations.
A notable enhancement is the construction of a 50-seater covered stand, replacing an existing standing-only area that accommodates around 10-12 spectators. This new stand, similar to successful installations at other local clubs, will include dedicated wheelchair spaces, ensuring accessibility for all fans.
To meet FA standards, St Day AFC plans to extend their pitch by approximately 2 meters and install a spectator barrier and path, which requires modifying the adjacent bank and adding a low retaining wall. This expansion is vital for complying with minimum pitch size requirements.
Additionally, the club intends to install floodlights, a requirement for hosting senior team games in the evening. These lights, equipped with cowls to minimise light intrusion, will be used sparingly, primarily for around 6 to 8 matches annually. The club has proposed conditions to limit their usage to address any potential concerns.
The club’s ambition is driven by its current success, as the first team leads the St Piran League, a regional feeder league. Upgrades are necessary for promotion to the higher league, and the club has the opportunity to secure funding for these improvements.
Located near modern dwellings and a club house already approved for a large extension, the proposed works are not expected to significantly impact the adjacent World Heritage site.
St Day AFC, a registered charity, provides valuable facilities for the local community. The planned upgrades reflect the club’s commitment to football excellence and community engagement, and if approved, could mark a new era for the club, capitalising on their current success and potential funding opportunities.
