Pool Academy Students Learn From Holocaust Survivor During National Webcast
Cornish Pupils Hear Firsthand Holocaust Story That Left Them Silent
Students at Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, took part in a national webcast run by the Holocaust Educational Trust to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The session saw year 9 students join pupils from across the country to hear powerful testimony linked to this year’s theme, Bridging Generations.
Hearing From a Holocaust Survivor
Students listened to Paul Sved, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary, who spoke about his experiences as a child living under Nazi occupation. Paul described time spent in ghettos and in hiding during the Holocaust. Now one of the few survivors still alive, he dedicates his life to ensuring future generations remember what happened.
Paul was joined by his son, Richard, who works with charities focused on Holocaust education and tackling anti-Semitism. Richard spoke about the importance of passing on these stories and challenging prejudice in the present day.
Thoughtful Questions From Students
Pool Academy students were praised for their attentiveness and engagement throughout the webcast. They listened carefully and asked thoughtful questions about Paul and Richard’s experiences, as well as the lessons they believe young people can take forward.
The session forms part of the school’s wider approach to teaching tolerance, human rights and social responsibility, giving students time to reflect on the past and consider the role they can play in creating a more understanding and inclusive community.
Principal’s Response
Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, said:
“Our year 9 students were moved and inspired by Paul and Richard’s testimony. It’s an important opportunity for them to reflect on history and understand the role they can play in promoting tolerance and respect today.”
The webcast offered students a rare chance to hear directly from a Holocaust survivor, helping to ensure these stories continue to be remembered and understood by younger generations.
