Royal Helicopter Stuns Students: Princess Anne Drops In on Pool Academy Field
Students waved as The Princess Royal arrived unexpectedly on school grounds during a historic visit to South Crofty Mine
Pool Academy in Cornwall had a royal surprise this month when HRH The Princess Royal landed by helicopter on the school field.
The school, which is part of the Athena Learning Trust, was chosen as the official landing site for Princess Anne’s visit to South Crofty Mine, a location with deep historical and cultural ties to Cornwall’s mining heritage.
A Royal Buzz Across Campus
Excitement spread quickly as staff and students caught sight of Princess Anne and received a wave from Her Royal Highness. The moment created a real sense of occasion, transforming what would have been a normal school day into one that students say they’ll remember for years to come.
Speaking about the experience, Principal Nick Ward said:
“We were absolutely delighted to welcome HRH Princess Anne to our grounds. It was a proud and inspiring moment for our students and staff, and one that brought a great sense of excitement to the whole school community. We are honoured to have played a small part in such a significant local visit.”
Sadie Sutcliffe, Executive Assistant, Communications and Clerk to Governors, was also present for the royal arrival.
A Proud Day for Pool Academy
The visit comes at a time when Pool Academy continues to focus on its core values of aspiration, belonging and respect. The school holds high expectations for student conduct and aims to support every student in reaching their full potential.
According to Ofsted, pupils at Pool Academy “feel safe at school and value the strong pastoral support they receive”. Inspectors also praised the school’s “quiet and calm classrooms” and its “well-planned curriculum”.
The helicopter arrival may have lasted only minutes, but it left a lasting impression on the entire school community.
