Pool Academy Year 11s Step Back in Time with Hands-On Learning

Year 11 history students from Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, have returned from an unforgettable two-day trip to London, where they experienced history come to life through an immersive educational adventure.

From Parliament to Whitechapel: A Journey Through Time

The trip began with a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, where students gained insights into the inner workings of government and even met Perran Moon, MP for Camborne and Redruth. Standing in the historic Westminster Hall, they reflected on its turbulent past, having witnessed trials of historic figures like Guy Fawkes and King Charles I.

Next, the group ventured into the streets of Whitechapel, once stalked by the infamous Jack the Ripper. The chilling exploration provided a unique glimpse into the mystery surrounding one of history’s most notorious figures.

A Moving Visit to the Imperial War Museum

A visit to the Imperial War Museum’s Holocaust exhibition offered the students a sobering opportunity to reflect on the horrors of the past. The exhibition’s impactful presentation deepened their understanding of one of the world’s darkest periods.

Ending on a Dramatic Note

The trip concluded with an immersive experience centred around the Gunpowder Plot. Students found themselves amidst the twists and turns of the infamous conspiracy, experiencing the plot’s final moments in a gripping, interactive setting.

Encouraging Critical Thinking

Principal Nick Ward praised the students for their conduct, noting that they were exceptional ambassadors for the school.

“Throughout the entire visit, our Year 11 students were exceptional ambassadors for the school, demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect as they engaged with the rich history on display,” said Nick.

The school’s history curriculum covers local, British and global events, aiming to provide students with a coherent understanding of the past. By encouraging critical thinking and the ability to weigh evidence, the school aims to help students develop moral, cultural, social and political awareness.

A School Rooted in Aspiration and Respect

Pool Academy’s core values of aspiration, belonging and respect are reflected in everything they do. Ofsted inspectors noted that pupils feel safe at school, value the strong pastoral support provided, and benefit from quiet and calm classrooms guided by a well-planned curriculum.

The educational trip not only enhanced the students’ historical knowledge but also offered a powerful reminder of how history shapes the present.
