You Won’t Believe How Pool Academy Brought Shakespeare to Life at the Minack Theatre
Shakespeare Week Celebrations Take Year 10 Students from Page to Stage
Year 10 students from Pool Academy took centre stage this term as part of Shakespeare Week, with a memorable and immersive workshop at the iconic Minack Theatre.
A group of 34 pupils explored Macbeth, the play they’re studying for GCSE English Literature, through an interactive session that delved into character, story, and key quotations—all within the dramatic cliffside setting of South-West Cornwall’s famous open-air theatre.
Shakespeare on the Edge
The workshop gave students a unique opportunity to engage with Shakespeare’s work in an unforgettable way. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Minack Theatre, the experience brought new energy and understanding to the classic tragedy.
Shakespeare Week, run annually by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, encourages young people across the UK to explore Shakespeare’s language, stories, and characters.
Creative Arts at Pool Academy
Pool Academy, part of the Athena Learning Trust, continues to offer a wide range of creative experiences for students across Art, Drama, and Music. Pupils have performed at venues such as the Hall for Cornwall, taken part in events like Songfest, and worked with professional artists from the St Ives School of Painting.
Principal Nick Ward said:
“Our students had an amazing time during the workshop at the Minack Theatre. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to engage with Macbeth in such a creative and immersive environment. At Pool Academy, we’re passionate about the arts, and our students’ growth in both drama and English is something we truly value. The experience of performing and learning in such an iconic setting will undoubtedly stay with them throughout their GCSE journey.”
A School Rooted in Aspiration and Respect
Pool Academy’s core values—aspiration, belonging, and respect—run through everything they do. The school sets high expectations for all students and aims to support them through a calm, purposeful environment.
Ofsted inspectors noted that pupils feel safe, value the pastoral support, and benefit from quiet, focused classrooms shaped by a well-planned curriculum.
The workshop at the Minack was yet another opportunity for students to go beyond the classroom and connect with learning in an inspiring way.
