Two People Rescued After Rock Jumping Incident at Porthcothan Bay
Two people injured after being washed into the sea
Two people were rescued at Porthcothan Bay on Sunday evening after being washed into the sea while rock jumping.
HM Coastguard Padstow reported that at 1812hrs on Sunday 10th August 2025, while they were finishing a previous tasking at Diggory’s, another emergency came through. Two people had been seen jumping off rocks on the northern side of the beach and one appeared to be in difficulty.
Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team and Newquay RNLI Lifeboats were also tasked to the scene.
Swept in by sudden larger waves
It transpired that the casualties had been rock jumping in an area they had visited many times before. A few waves, described as “bigger than any others they had seen that evening,” came through and washed them into the sea.
They managed to scramble back onto the rocks to a place of safety but had sustained injuries.

Medical treatment and recovery
The team arrived and medically assessed the casualties, treated them, and monitored their condition. They were then transported back to the beach car park, where a family member drove them to hospital for further checks.
HM Coastguard Padstow said:
“We wish them a speedy recovery. The ocean is very unpredictable, no matter your experience or competencies. Please swim on lifeguarded beaches between 10am and 6pm.
A huge thank you to the first informant that called this in to 999. We commend your vigilance and the casualties were also extremely grateful.
If you see anyone in trouble, on or near the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Stay safe!”
