Dramatic Rescue at Porthtowan Beach Highlights RNLI Safety Warning
Mother and Daughter Saved from Rip Current
On Sunday, 23 June, RNLI lifeguards at Porthtowan beach demonstrated the critical importance of water safety measures after rescuing a mother and daughter caught in a rip current. The incident, which occurred just after 6pm, has prompted RNLI lifeguards in the south west to issue a stern safety warning as the region prepares for a heatwave.
Swift Action from Lifeguards
The rescue unfolded when a concerned member of the public alerted the lifeguards, who had already noticed the pair struggling in the water. Louie Ingram, an RNLI lifeguard, quickly paddled out approximately 30 metres to reach the mother and daughter. Upon arrival, Louie found them in the recommended “Float to Live” position, following RNLI’s life-saving advice. This technique, which involves tilting the head back, relaxing, and using hands to stay afloat, helped them conserve energy and control their breathing until help arrived. Louie successfully brought both individuals back to shore safely.
Praise for Lifesaving Advice
Martyn Ward, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for Perranporth, commended the lifeguards’ quick response and highlighted the effectiveness of the “Float to Live” advice. “Our lifeguards did a great job in responding to a dangerous situation after two casualties were caught in a rip current just after 6pm. What was great to hear though was that the casualties were in the Float to Live position when Louie arrived on the scene, having heard the advice previously from the RNLI. It meant that they were able to keep themselves afloat whilst conserving their energy and control their breathing,” Martyn said. “Whilst we hope no one does find themselves in difficulty, the mother and daughter did exactly the right thing and it is good to see our message is reaching people.”
Safety Warning Amid Heatwave
As temperatures in the south west are expected to reach the mid-twenties later this week, RNLI lifeguards are urging beachgoers to prioritise safety. The coast is anticipated to be extremely busy, and the RNLI is reminding the public to visit lifeguarded beaches and swim between the red and yellow flags. RNLI lifeguards are patrolling around 60 beaches in the region this week, offering safety advice and assistance to anyone in trouble.
“Float to Live” – Essential Tips
The RNLI’s “Float to Live” campaign provides essential tips for those who find themselves in trouble in the water:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and try to control your breathing
- Use your hands to help you stay afloat
- It’s OK if your legs sink; we all float differently
