Members of the Plymouth & District branches of the Oddfellows have recently returned from a productive four-day regional conference held in Bournemouth, where significant decisions were made that promise enhanced benefits for the society’s members.

Conference Highlights

The event, which was well attended by hundreds of members from across the southern regions, commenced with a warm welcome from Councillor Leslie Dedman, the Chairman of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. Leslie expressed gratitude towards the Oddfellows for selecting Bournemouth as the venue for their annual gathering.

During the conference, attendees discussed key issues including the appointment of the Officers for the Southern Group Oddfellows Executive Committee and reviewed the financial accounts. They also prepared numerous topics to be presented at the upcoming Oddfellows National Conference scheduled later this year in Llandudno.

Member Benefits and Social Engagements

A significant highlight for many, especially those travelling from Cornwall, was the decision to maintain the current membership fees while substantially increasing the range of benefits available. These enhancements include improved access to dental grants and expansions in optical, care, and emergency grants, alongside legal advice services.

The formal gala dinner, graced by Leslie and her consort, was a notable event, featuring a dinner followed by a lively dancing session, allowing members to engage socially beyond the formal discussions.

Local Attractions and Networking

Amidst the busy agenda, delegates also had opportunities to explore local attractions in Bournemouth, fostering a mix of leisure with business. This provided a perfect setting for both new and old members to connect and discuss mutual interests in a relaxed environment.

Ken Thomas from Helston and Pete English from Redruth, both past Presidents of the Southern Group, were notable speakers at the event. Ken remarked on the blend of professionalism and camaraderie at the conference, praising the society for its enduring commitment to member welfare since its establishment in 1810.

Joining the Oddfellows

The Oddfellows continues to welcome new members from all backgrounds, offering a supportive community with numerous benefits. Interested individuals can contact the Provincial Secretary, Peter English, for more information on how to join and the advantages of membership.

This year’s conference has certainly reinforced the Oddfellows’ reputation as a society that not only cares for its members’ welfare but also fosters a strong sense of community among its members. For those interested in joining or learning more about the society, further details are available on the Oddfellows website.
