International Gathering in Redruth Celebrates Prestigious Award to Local Oddfellows Member
A recent celebratory lunch at Redruth’s Penventon Hotel brought together guests from across the globe to honour Peter English, a long-standing member of the Oddfellows, as he was awarded the prestigious Unity Meritorious Service Jewel.
A Global Gathering
The event, which was attended by special guests from as far afield as The Netherlands, marked a significant milestone in Peter’s 52-year membership of the Oddfellows, a friendly society known for its strong community bonds and charitable works. The occasion featured a reception followed by a magnificent three-course meal paired with fine wines. The atmosphere was lively, with vibrant conversation and a special toast dedicated to Peter’s remarkable achievements. Messages of congratulations were also read from afar, adding to the celebratory spirit.
A Rare Honour
The Unity Meritorious Service Jewel awarded to Peter is one of the highest honours within the Oddfellows, with only eight living recipients worldwide. The award is made of solid gold, underscoring its significance and the exceptional contributions of its recipients. Peter’s long-time friend, Mervyn Eaton, who has been an Oddfellows member for 36 years and is also a recipient of the jewel, was among the distinguished guests at the event.
Peter currently holds the position of Provincial Corresponding Secretary of the Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows and is a fully qualified Welfare Officer. His extensive service record includes roles such as Noble Grand (Chairperson) of several Lodges, President of the Oddfellows Southern Group Conference, chair of the Unity Investigation Committee, and Special Arbitrator. These roles are considered highly responsible within the Oddfellows, a society that operates as a multi-million pound fraternal and friendly society and non-profit mutual organisation.
Celebrations Continue
The award announcement was made earlier this year by Barbara Needham, Grand Master of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity Friendly Society, during a national conference. The event was attended by high-ranking members of the Oddfellows, including Chief Executive and Secretary Jane Nelson, and members of the American Independent Order of Oddfellows.
Further celebrations are planned throughout the year to honour Peter’s achievements, with Jane Nelson set to attend one of the upcoming events.
A Warm Welcome to New Members
The Oddfellows, founded in 1810, continues to thrive as a friendly society, offering a variety of social activities across locations such as Plymouth, Truro, and Redruth.
