Oddfellows Visit Historic St Hilary Church with Norwegian Guests

Members of the Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows Friendly Society were treated to a day rich in heritage, reflection and connection on a recent visit to the historic St Hilary Church near Penzance. Organised with help from the Redruth Antiquarians, the visit welcomed local and international members alike, including special guests Svein and Ann Hegland from the Oddfellows Society in Norway.

History, Art and Fellowship

The group began their visit at the church’s heritage centre, where guided information sheets walked them through the site’s remarkable past. From pre-Christian memorials dating back to Roman times to the powerful legacy of the Newlyn School of Art, the visit offered something for everyone to reflect on.

Inside the church, members explored religious artefacts and paused to learn about its more troubled history, including a notorious 1932 raid by extremists from Plymouth that left lasting damage. St Hilary also holds the title of being the first church in the UK to broadcast a live BBC radio service.

Father Jeff Risbridger, Focal Priest of St Hilary, welcomed the group alongside members of the congregation, helping to make the occasion even more meaningful.

Food, Friendship and International Ties

Light refreshments in the church gave everyone a chance to pause, connect and reflect before the group made their way to the White Hart Hotel in Hayle for lunch. There, Svein shared insights into how the Oddfellows Society operates in Norway. The day closed with a warm exchange of gifts and appreciation.

As one member simply put it, “Today was the best of days.”
