In a dramatic early morning operation on Thursday, 21st March, the courage and swift action of The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat crew shone brightly as they responded to a distress call near The Devil’s Frying Pan, close to Kilcobben Cove.

The urgent mission was to rescue two kayakers who found themselves in perilous waters, a mere stone’s throw from the lifeboat station.

Urgent Call to Action

At 08:45 am, the team’s pagers blared to life, a direct request from Falmouth Coastguard beckoning their aid. Within minutes, RNLB Rose was slicing through the waves, under the adept leadership of Second Coxswain Darren Thirlaway. By 08:57 am, the lifeboat was launched, and the team reached the scene at 09:01 am, a testament to their readiness and proximity to the incident.

A Perilous Situation

Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew was met with a harrowing scene. One of the kayakers managed to communicate that her companion had been swept from his kayak, now grappling for safety within the clutches of Dollar Ogo cave. Battling against a fierce sea swell, the kayaker was seen clinging to rocks, a situation that was as dangerous as it was desperate.

The Rescue Effort

With no time to lose, the crew deployed the smaller Y-boat in an attempt to navigate the treacherous cave entrance. The cave’s accessibility proved formidable, forcing a bold but necessary decision. A crew member dived into the hostile waters, swimming towards the stranded kayaker. Demonstrating exceptional bravery and skill, the crew member was able to assist the kayaker back to the safety of the Y-boat, and subsequently, aboard RNLB Rose where immediate medical assistance was provided.

Safe Return and Aftermath

The able kayaker was escorted back to Cadgwith Cove, and by 10:10 am, RNLB Rose made its return to the station. The quick response of a South West Ambulance crew ensured that the casualty received professional medical care promptly. Despite the mission’s success, the casualty’s kayak remains lost within the cave, pushed further into its depths by the tide. HM Coastguards have been briefed on the kayak’s description and location in case it re-emerges.

A Community Effort

This rescue operation was not just a display of the RNLI crew’s dedication and skill but also a reflection of the community’s collective spirit. HM Coastguard Rescue Teams and the crew of the fishing vessel “Kingfisher II”, who stood by during the operation, played critical roles in the day’s success. The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, highlighting the community’s unwavering support and teamwork in times of crisis.
