Penlee Lifeboat Mechanic to Run London Marathon in Honor of RNLI’s 200th Anniversary
On April 21st, 2024, Tony Rendle, a dedicated mechanic at Penlee Lifeboat Station, is set to participate in the London Marathon, marking a significant milestone in his career and for a noble cause. This event is not just any race for Tony; it symbolises his commitment to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) mission of saving lives at sea as the organisation celebrates its 200th year of lifesaving service.
This marathon holds a special place in Tony’s heart, being his second time competing in the prestigious event. At Penlee Lifeboat Station, Tony is known for his expertise in maintaining the Severn Class Lifeboat, Ivan Ellen, specifically its two Caterpillar 3412 TA 27 litre V12 turbocharged and intercooled 1,250hp diesel engines. These engines are crucial for life-saving missions, and Tony’s work ensures they are ready to go when called upon.
Tony’s goal for this year’s marathon is to complete the race in under 4 hours and 45 minutes, an ambitious target considering his previous time of 5 hours and 15 minutes. More importantly, Tony aims to surpass the £2,500 he raised for the RNLI during his last marathon run. His dedication to the cause is evident in his 20-year service with the RNLI, where he has contributed both as a volunteer and as a mechanic. His background as a former Royal Navy aircraft engineer mechanic has undoubtedly prepared him for the challenges and responsibilities that come with his role at the RNLI.
Supporters who wish to contribute to Tony’s cause can do so through his JustGiving page. Donations are processed securely and efficiently, ensuring that the funds reach the RNLI directly, aiding them in their mission to save lives at sea.
Tony Rendle’s participation in the London Marathon is a testament to his dedication to the RNLI and its lifesaving mission. As he takes on this challenge, he carries with him the support of his community and the hopes of continuing the RNLI’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
