In a pioneering move to blend entertainment with education, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has introduced a novel way to engage the younger audience through “Storm Force Rescue,” a mobile game designed to impart lifesaving water safety tips.

This initiative comes as the RNLI, known for its commendable service of saving lives at sea, marks its 200th anniversary.

Bridging History with Modern Technology

“Storm Force Rescue” is not just any game; it’s a tribute to the RNLI’s two centuries of valiant efforts in lifesaving. Available for free on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, the game aims to inspire and educate children through interactive play. Players can select from five different characters, each embarking on a series of rescue missions that are not only thrilling but also educational, offering vital water safety advice.

An Engaging Learning Experience

The game offers a rich, colourful 3D experience where young gamers navigate through various challenging conditions such as rip currents and large waves, using a range of RNLI’s rescue equipment. According to Sam, the RNLI’s Water Safety Education Manager, the game is an enjoyable way for children to familiarize themselves with the organization’s critical work. “At a time when digital engagement is at its peak among young people, it’s crucial for RNLI’s presence to extend into these platforms, potentially saving lives with valuable advice,” he stated.

Cultivating Future Lifesavers

One of the game’s unique aspects is its non-violent approach to gaming, focusing solely on lifesaving rather than combat or aggression. Nick Roberts from Amuzo Games, the studio behind the game’s development, expressed pride in creating a game that promotes the RNLI’s mission and imparts safety tips to children. “It’s an example of the positive impact videogames can have,” Nick remarked.

A Legacy of Lifesaving

With 146,277 lives saved since its inception in 1824, the RNLI’s efforts have been monumental. The introduction of “Storm Force Rescue” is a step towards ensuring that the legacy of lifesaving continues by engaging the next generation in a meaningful way. The game, suitable for children aged 4 and above, is available for download without any in-app purchases, reflecting the RNLI’s commitment to accessibility and education.
