Swift Rescue by RNLI Crew off Looe Coast & Warning Of High Tides
On the afternoon of Sunday, 24 March 2024, a quick response from the RNLI Looe Lifeboat Station volunteers saw a dramatic rescue unfold just off the coast between Looe and Millendreath.
Following an urgent call relayed by Falmouth MRCC, the crew launched the D Class inshore lifeboat, Ollie Naismith II, to aid three individuals trapped by the rising tide on a secluded beach.
Race Against Time
Merely eight minutes after the alert, the volunteer team was at sea, embarking on a shoreline search. Their swift action was crucial, as the group found themselves stranded on a diminishing patch of sand, flanked by water and a steep, insurmountable cliff face with no possible escape route. The RNLI crew’s expertise and quick thinking ensured the stranded party was located and rescued promptly.
Safe Return
The rescue operation culminated with the safe onboard retrieval of the individuals, who were then transported back to the safety of the lifeboat station. This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of coastal waters, especially during periods of unusually high tides.
A Cautionary Note
The RNLI Looe Lifeboat Station has issued a warning in light of the forthcoming full moon this evening and the expected high spring tides, which will coincide with nightfall. Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution, stay vigilant of their surroundings, and adhere to safety guidelines. Checking tide times, identifying safe exit points, and refraining from climbing the cliffs are emphasised due to the instability of such terrains. Importantly, carrying a means to call for help is advised, with the reminder that in emergencies, dialling 999 and requesting the coastguard is the correct procedure.
This recent rescue operation by the RNLI volunteers at Looe underscores the critical work performed by the charity’s crews in ensuring the safety of those at sea and along the coastline. Their readiness and swift action continue to be a beacon of hope and safety for the community.
