The RNLI is on the lookout for new lifeguards to join its team of frontline lifesavers, offering a unique and rewarding job that keeps thousands of beachgoers safe each year.
Why Become a Lifeguard?
Lifeguarding isn’t just about patrolling beaches—it’s an opportunity to build life and work experience while earning good pay. The role comes with extensive training, offering valuable skills that can be applied to many careers. RNLI lifeguards work on a variety of beaches, gain new qualifications, and develop transferable skills.
Lifeguards are essential to beach safety. In 2023 alone, around 1,600 RNLI lifeguards covered over 240 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, responding to 14,293 incidents, assisting 19,979 people, and saving 86 lives.
What You Need to Apply
Applicants need to be at least 16 years old and of school-leaving age. They must also have:
- A National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (or equivalent)
- A specific level of fitness
- The right to work in the UK
For those who don’t yet have the necessary qualification, there are ways to get certified before applying. Full details on the requirements and training can be found here.
Flexible Work and Competitive Pay
RNLI lifeguards earn between £12.30 and £14.10 per hour, depending on their role. The RNLI understands that some applicants may have other commitments, such as family care or shift work, and aims to offer flexibility where possible.
Training and Career Progression
Lifeguards receive continuous training throughout their time with the RNLI, covering everything from handling beach equipment to first aid and casualty care. These skills can open up career opportunities beyond lifeguarding, making it a great stepping stone for the future.
