Four Years of Affiliation Celebrated in Saltash

China Fleet Country Club in Saltash is marking four years since it formally affiliated with Royal Navy vessel HMS TAMAR, a milestone that highlights the Club’s long-standing ties with the Royal Navy and its support for serving personnel and their families.

HMS TAMAR is connected with both the Country Club and the China Fleet Trust, the military charity that owns the Club, reflecting the deep bond between the ship, Cornwall, and the surrounding communities.

HMS TAMAR’s Global Mission

Since departing the UK in September 2021, HMS TAMAR has been on a five-year mission patrolling the Indo-Pacific region. The vessel has often worked alongside international partners and recently drew attention for a mercy dash to Samoa. On that mission, her crew supported the recovery of personnel and equipment from the New Zealand ship HMNZS Manawanui, which sank after striking a reef.

This Christmas will be HMS TAMAR’s fifth festive season away from home waters, but the ties with Cornwall remain strong.

A “Home Port” for Families

Over the past four years, China Fleet Country Club has served as a “home port” for the families and loved ones of HMS TAMAR’s crew. The Club regularly exchanges newsletters, photos, and updates with the ship, all displayed in a dedicated area for members and visitors. Social media posts, Christmas cards, and other gestures of support ensure the crew stay connected to home while serving thousands of miles away.

Dean Bennett, Managing Director at China Fleet Country Club, said:
“HMS TAMAR represents the Royal Navy’s future, and we are incredibly proud to be part of her journey. This milestone celebrates not only the crew’s dedication but also the bond we share with their families here in Cornwall. Through regular updates, displays, and events, we aim to ensure they always feel connected to home.”

Investment in Community

The Club has continued to invest in its facilities, including recent gym and Aqua Spa refurbishments, making it one of the region’s most modern health and fitness destinations. It serves both military and civilian communities, reaffirming its role as a place of support and pride for Cornwall and Plymouth.

Dean added:
“China Fleet Country Club was founded to serve those who serve, and our partnership with HMS TAMAR ensures that tradition continues today. We are proud to support the ship, her crew, and their families while they are away from home.”
