New Changing Rooms Open at Saltash Leisure Centre
Phase one of a major refurbishment at Saltash Leisure Centre has been completed, with new poolside changing rooms now open to the public.
The new facilities include an accessible toilet and five showers. Two are designed for families, one is accessible, and two are currently housed in temporary cubicles. These temporary showers will be replaced by communal showers during the next stage of the development.
A newly enhanced reception area and a new staff office are also fully operational.
Work Ongoing While Centre Stays Open
Saltash Leisure Centre is operated under the Better brand by GLL, a not for profit social enterprise that runs Saltash and eight other leisure centres across Cornwall on behalf of Cornwall Council.
Work at the centre began in mid June, with the leisure centre remaining open throughout the refurbishment.
Sharon Speed, the leisure centre manager, said customers have been very positive about the changes so far and thanked them for their patience while improvements continue.
What’s Coming Next
The next phase will focus on upgrading the area currently used as the walk through to the pool. Plans include new cubicle showers, communal showers, and gym and class facilities with changing pods, showers and toilets.
The overall £1.8m refurbishment forms part of Cornwall Council’s estates transformation programme. The work will also create space for the Saltash registrar service, a local safe and well hub, and new meeting and work areas for council officers and members.
James Curry, GLL Head of Service, said the centre is on its way to becoming the first community hub of its kind in Cornwall, bringing multiple services together under one roof to encourage greater use of the building.
