Urgent Call for Volunteers: Saltash Sight Loss Club Needs Your Help!
Saltash BAPS (Blind and Partially Sighted) Club, a vital social hub for individuals with vision impairments in Saltash, is urgently seeking new volunteers to ensure its continued success.
Established over 60 years ago, the club has become a cornerstone of the community, offering social activities, trips, and a supportive environment for its members.
Recognised for Community Contribution
Recently, Saltash BAPS was honoured with the Mayor’s Civic Award by outgoing Saltash Mayor Richard Bickford, in recognition of its significant contribution to the community. Despite this accolade, the club’s future depends on attracting new volunteers to sustain and grow its activities.
An Appeal for New Helpers
Shirley, the club organiser who has been leading Saltash BAPS for more than 20 years, expressed her love for the club and the joy she finds in helping visually impaired individuals. “It’s a wonderful club, I really do love being a part of it. My favourite part about running the club is helping other visually impaired people and making them happy, just doing something to help people is the best bit,” Shirley shared.
However, the current team of dedicated volunteers has been serving for a long time, and there is a pressing need for fresh faces to bring new experiences and energy to the club.
Support from iSightCornwall
Saltash BAPS is affiliated with iSightCornwall, a sight loss charity that is fully backing the club’s efforts to recruit more helpers. Carole Theobald, Chief Executive of iSightCornwall, highlighted the importance of the club, saying, “Saltash BAPS offers a social space where people with sight loss can share experiences, make long-lasting friendships, and take part in activities and visits they may not have tried on their own. We’re very proud of the club and of all of the people it’s welcomed through its doors over the years.”
Carole also emphasised the invaluable role of volunteers, acknowledging the significant impact they have on the club’s operations. “We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers and we’re so thankful to people like Shirley for everything they do. From speaking to our volunteers, I know they get a lot out of it, and I would encourage anyone who’s thinking of helping out to give it a try.”
