Injured Cyclists, Missing Persons, and Late-Night Rescues: September Update from East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team

The East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team has been busy throughout September, responding to multiple calls for assistance across the region. Here’s a breakdown of their key operations for the month.

Walker Injured on Caradon Hill

On 4th September, the team received a call from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust regarding an injured walker on Caradon Hill. Fortunately, the walker’s condition improved, and the team was stood down shortly after. They extended their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Search for High-Risk Missing Person in Bude

Ten days later, on 14th September, the team was requested by Devon & Cornwall Police to assist in the search for a high-risk missing person in the Bude area. As team members began arriving at the rendezvous point, the missing individual was found safe and well. The team was stood down at 23:47, marking another successful outcome.

Cyclist Rescued Near St Austell

On 20th September, an injured cyclist near Ruddlemoor, St Austell, prompted another call from the South Western Ambulance Service. While the team prepared to assist with extraction, the ambulance crew managed to safely transport the cyclist without further help. The team wished the cyclist a full recovery.

Young Farmers Get Hands-On with Rescue Equipment

The team took a break from active operations on 26th September to host an evening with Roche & District Young Farmers Club. The young farmers had the opportunity to engage with the team’s equipment and learn about their search and rescue techniques. The evening was filled with questions and light-hearted moments.

Search for Missing Person in Lanjeth

In the early hours of 28th September, at 00:56, the team was called upon again by Devon & Cornwall Police to assist with a high-risk missing person case near Lanjeth, St Austell. The team battled through tough terrain, including thick undergrowth, long grass, and steep ground. After several hours of searching, at 07:03, it was confirmed that the missing person had safely returned home. The team then headed home themselves for a well-deserved breakfast.

Fundraising Efforts at Bodmin Morrisons

The month ended with a fundraising event on 28th and 29th September at Bodmin Morrisons, where members of the public raised a generous £603 for the team. East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team, a volunteer-run charity, relies entirely on donations to stay operational. The public’s support is crucial to ensuring the team can continue responding to emergencies at any time, day or night.
