South West Water Under Fire: MP Demands Answers Over Pollution Concerns

Published On: 25 February 2025Last Updated: 25 February 2025By

Anna Gelderd, Labour MP for South East Cornwall, has confronted the CEO of South West Water over ongoing concerns about water quality, pollution, and public health. During today’s (25th February) session of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, Anna pressed the company’s leadership on its responsibility to clean up the region’s waterways.

Concerns from the Community

Residents in South East Cornwall have repeatedly raised issues regarding water quality, highlighting fears about pollution and its impact on public health and the environment. Anna used the session to challenge South West Water on whether it prioritises community and environmental health over shareholder profit.

However, key questions about the company’s transparency remained unanswered, reinforcing long-standing concerns about accountability.

“Simply Unacceptable”

Following the session, Anna said:

“Time and time again, constituents tell me how worried they are about water quality, pollution, and the risks to public health. It’s simply unacceptable. South West Water must be held accountable for the damage to our environment and the impact on local communities.

Labour is already leading the way with new legislation to clean up our waterways, but water companies need to step up too, putting people and the planet before profit. I’ll keep fighting to make sure South East Cornwall gets the clean, safe water it deserves.”

Anna reaffirmed her commitment to protecting public health and the local environment, which plays a crucial role in South East Cornwall’s economy.

With transparency concerns still looming over South West Water, the pressure is on for the company to prove it is taking these issues seriously.
