Thousands of Schoolchildren Learn Valuable Water Lessons: South West Water’s Sophie Moore Travels the Region
South West Water is making a splash in schools across Devon and Cornwall, educating thousands of children about the importance of water conservation.
Over the last academic year, the company’s Community Engagement Officer, Sophie Moore, has inspired more than 6,000 students through her engaging lessons.
Travelling across the picturesque South West, Sophie visited 76 schools, delivering lessons designed to help children understand where their water comes from, the challenges involved in storing and treating it, and the small steps they can take to protect this precious resource.
Tailored Lessons for Every Classroom
Sophie’s lessons are split into five key topics: water efficiency, drinking water, wastewater, the environment, and wellbeing. Each lesson is tailored to suit different age groups and learning needs, ensuring that every student walks away with a deeper understanding of the value of water.
Sophie expressed her passion for the programme, saying, “Travelling the beautiful South West region and seeing all of the kids listen, learn and engage in my lessons is truly rewarding. Knowing that I may just inspire a future generation to continue to save water and have a better appreciation of the work that goes into getting it from the sky to their tap is what gets me up and going each morning.”
Positive Feedback from Schools
The impact of Sophie’s work has not gone unnoticed by the schools she visits. A teacher from Mylor Bridge Primary School in Falmouth praised Sophie’s approach, highlighting her efficiency, flexibility, and the careful planning of lessons in coordination with the school’s science curriculum. The teacher noted that Sophie’s ability to manage behaviour and keep the students engaged, combined with her use of humour, made the lessons particularly enjoyable for the children.
The year four students at Mylor Bridge were so impressed that they created a scrapbook for Sophie, filled with thanks and memories from their time together.
How to Get Involved
South West Water’s educational outreach continues to be a valuable resource for schools across the region. For those interested in bringing Sophie’s lessons to their classrooms, more information can be found on the South West Water website.
Sophie Moore’s journey across Devon and Cornwall is an inspiring example of how one person can make a significant impact on future generations, helping to foster a greater appreciation for the vital role water plays in our lives.
