Thousands Raised for Wildlife Charities at South West Water’s First Reservoir Run

Over 200 participants ran around Roadford Reservoir, raising £2,000 for Devon and Cornwall Wildlife Trusts.

A Community Effort for Cornwall’s Wildlife

South West Water’s inaugural Reservoir Run was a hit, attracting over 200 runners of all ages and abilities to Roadford Reservoir this summer. Organised in collaboration with South West Lakes Trust, the event featured routes of 2.5k, 5k, and 10k, catering to a variety of experience levels.

This wasn’t just about running; the event aimed to support a greater cause. Together, participants raised an impressive £2,000 for two essential local wildlife charities: Devon Wildlife Trust and Cornwall Wildlife Trust. These organisations are dedicated to preserving the unique natural environments and diverse wildlife of Devon and Cornwall.

A Day to Celebrate

The Reservoir Run was more than a race; it was a celebration of community spirit and natural beauty. At the finish line, runners were awarded sustainable wooden medals, goodie bags, and a delightful treat of fresh strawberries and chocolate brownies provided by Strawberry Fields Farm.

Adele Barker, Chief People Officer at South West Water, expressed her pride in the event’s success, emphasising the importance of community support and environmental protection. “What we do matters, and just as water is essential to life – so is the support we provide to local communities and in protecting and enhancing our natural environment. This event shows we care, as do the hundreds of people who took part in South West Water’s first ever Reservoir Run.”

Roadford Reservoir

Situated between Okehampton and Launceston, Roadford Reservoir is more than just a source of fresh drinking water for the local area. It’s a beloved nature reserve and a popular spot for a range of leisure activities, including sailing, windsurfing, and fishing.

Matt Lennox, Head of Activities at South West Lakes Trust, shared his excitement about the event, noting the friendly atmosphere and picturesque setting. “It was an absolute pleasure to host the Reservoir Run at Roadford Lake. We’re no stranger to hosting big, organised events but this one in particular was so friendly and fun. The lake is such a beautiful place and really lends itself to running, cycling and walking. We’re looking forward to welcoming participants back in the future!”

Looking Ahead

Given the overwhelming success of the first Reservoir Run, South West Water has announced plans to host more of these events in the future. This initiative promises to build on the momentum and continue supporting local wildlife charities.

This event marks the beginning of a new tradition, blending the love of outdoor activities with a commitment to environmental conservation, and it’s clear that both the participants and the organisers are eager for more. Cornish wildlife stands to benefit greatly from these community-driven efforts.
