Spaceport Cornwall Selected for UK MOD Hypersonic Framework
Spaceport Cornwall Joins £1bn MOD Hypersonic Framework
Spaceport Cornwall has been selected to join the UK Ministry of Defence’s Hypersonic Technologies and Capability Development Framework, placing the Newquay-based facility among 90 organisations working to advance Britain’s defence systems.
The announcement, made today (15th July), highlights Spaceport Cornwall’s growing role in the defence and aerospace sector, particularly through its horizontal launch capabilities, advanced operational facilities and its strategic location at Cornwall Airport Newquay, next to RAF St Mawgan.
£1 Billion Investment into Hypersonic Capability
The MOD’s Hypersonic Technologies and Capability Development Framework (HTCDF) is a seven-year, £1 billion programme aimed at rapidly progressing hypersonic technology from early research through to full operational deployment. Spaceport Cornwall’s selection underlines the site’s ability to contribute meaningfully to this effort.
Ross Hulbert, Head of Engagement at Spaceport Cornwall, said:
“This is a defining moment for Spaceport Cornwall and demonstrates our commitment to supporting Britain’s defence capabilities. Our unique position as the UK’s first licensed spaceport, combined with our world-class facilities and proximity to both civilian and military aviation infrastructure, makes us ideally suited to contribute to this vital national capability.”
Supporting the UK’s Defence Commitments
The framework directly aligns with the government’s Strategic Defence Review and supports the UK’s pledge to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027. It’s also part of a broader plan to strengthen the country’s defence manufacturing sector while boosting collaboration through the AUKUS alliance with Australia and the United States.
Nearly half of the 90 organisations selected are Small and Medium Enterprises, demonstrating a broad commitment to drawing on the UK’s diverse innovation base. The framework will remain open to new suppliers every 6 to 12 months to keep pace with emerging technologies.
Hypersonics and Cornwall’s Role
By participating in the HTCDF, Spaceport Cornwall reinforces its standing as a hub for advanced aerospace and defence activity. The site is expected to play a key role in testing, development and deployment efforts that will shape the future of hypersonic capabilities in the UK.
With its established infrastructure and ties to both commercial and military aviation, Spaceport Cornwall is positioned to support vital work that could help secure Britain’s national interests and enhance its role on the global defence stage.
