Playing their opening Counties 1 Tribute Western West league game away to Barnstaple II last Saturday, the Pirates Amateurs won well, 31-22, at the Devon club’s Pottington Road ground.
Getting off to a fine start, full-back Ben Wragg opened the scoring with a penalty and also added the extras to the Pirates opening try scored by centre Morgan Holman. This past week’s named skipper, flanker Stan Somers, got a brace, and there was also a try scored by fly-half Oscar Marr. Wragg converted all four.
In reply the competitive Barnstaple team recorded three tries, one penalty, and two conversions.
Commenting after the game, Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren said:
“It was great to get an opening day victory away from home which is never an easy task.
“We had a very good pre-season but had to show a lot of character and fight to get all five points.”
It’s very early days but head coach Murray Westren was pleased to start the season’s campaign with a win.
