Buckland Monachorum vs Pencarrow Match Report
Pencarrow Suffer Heavy Defeat on Dartmoor as Survival Battle Continues
by Dan Cocker
Pencarrow faced their longest trip of the season to take on a strong Buckland Monachorum side — and returned home on the wrong side of a convincing 8-wicket loss. Losing the toss, Pencarrow were asked to bat first on a hard track under bright blue skies — a decision that immediately raised concerns in the visiting camp. Those fears proved well-founded, as the team encountered a barrage of short-pitched, bodyline bowling. With deliveries rearing off a length and three helmeted fielders crowding the bat (a Division 5 first, perhaps?), scoring proved difficult from the outset. The top order fought hard, but the quality of the Monachorum attack on such a lively wicket was decisive. Jack Carter top-scored with 20, as Pencarrow were bundled out for 63. S. Hoad returned figures of 3-29, while T. McLuskie was the standout with an impressive 6-31. In reply, Pencarrow battled gamely, but the hosts made light work of the chase — reaching their target in just 11.1 overs for the loss of two wickets. Benjamin Berry led the way with 40. There was one bright moment for the visitors, as young Jake Boyling took a superb running catch over his shoulder. The ball was hit so high it “came down with snow on it,” and the effort earned Pencarrow an extra point. Despite the defeat, Pencarrow left Devon with two points and, crucially, remain 19 points clear of nearest rivals Grampound Road in the fight to avoid relegation. Next up, Pencarrow host Newquay at the PCG this Saturday from 1pm — a win would all but guarantee their Division 5 status. The day also marks the club’s annual ‘Legends Day’, inviting all former players to reunite, reminisce, and enjoy a complimentary cricket tea.
