Great Win for the ‘Ams’
by Phil Westren
Bude: 24 – Pirates Amateurs: 43
Travelling to Bude’s Bencoolen Meadow ground on Saturday for this Counties 1 Tribute Western West encounter, a stirring second half performance delivered an ultimate fine victory.
24-12 down at the break, the Pirates lifted their performance in style for the second period, and in total scored seven tries in the match.
Full-back Ben Wragg and hooker Eli Williams – his fifth in two games – scored tries in the first half, with Wragg adding a conversion, whilst in the second half tries were scored by hooker Ted Hocking, scrum half Sam Carter, skipper Stan Somers, prop Joe Best, and Wragg again, who also kicked a further three conversions.
Speaking after the game, happy Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren said:
“This was ultimately a great win us, in which we attacked well for much of the game. However, we weren’t quite clinical enough in the first half, and coughing up the ball our opponents also found us too easy to score against. There was though a huge shift in the second half, where we were very dominant and scored some lovely tries.”
