Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Rugby Club Launches Fundraising Campaign for Equipment and Expansion
In an effort to support and expand the opportunities for disabled individuals seeking to return to sport, the Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Rugby Club, based in Cornwall, has initiated a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising £2,500.
This fund is dedicated to acquiring essential equipment that will enable the club to accommodate more players interested in wheelchair rugby, a sport known for its positive impact on both physical and mental health.
As Cornwall’s sole wheelchair rugby team, Celtic Warriors holds its training sessions in St Austell, providing a unique and inclusive environment for disabled people to engage in sports. Despite being a relatively new club, formed just last year, it boasts a growing roster of regular players and continues to attract interest from potential new members eager to experience the benefits of wheelchair rugby.
The inspiration behind this campaign is deeply personal for Al, the club’s treasurer, who credits wheelchair rugby with playing a pivotal role in his recovery and rehabilitation following severe sepsis and the amputation of his legs. For Al, the sport was more than just a physical activity; it was a gateway to rediscovering a sense of community and belonging, significantly enhancing his mental health and overall wellbeing.
However, the growth and sustainability of the Celtic Warriors are challenged by the high costs associated with wheelchair rugby. The sport requires specialised equipment, including custom playing chairs and various consumables like tyres and inner tubes, all of which come with significant expenses. The club’s fundraising efforts are aimed at overcoming these financial barriers, ensuring that more disabled individuals can benefit from the sport without being hindered by cost.
The Celtic Warriors are reaching out to the community for support, encouraging donations of any size. Contributions to the club’s campaign will directly impact its ability to serve more disabled individuals, fostering a more inclusive sporting environment and, hopefully, bringing smiles to many more faces.
You can donate on the Celtic Warriors JustGiving page.
Al expresses his gratitude in advance for any support provided, emphasising the profound difference wheelchair rugby can make in the lives of those who play it. The Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Rugby Club is committed to expanding its reach and continuing to offer a lifeline to those looking to rediscover joy, community, and physical activity through sport.
