Exciting Clash: Kernow FA to Host Chagos Islands in Historic Rematch

Published On: 8 July 2024Last Updated: 8 July 2024By

The Kernow Football Alliance is set to reignite its competitive spirit later this month by welcoming the Chagos Islands (BIOT) back to Cornwall.

The much-anticipated match will take place on Sunday, 21st July, marking the first outing for Cornwall’s representatives on the international footballing stage since their 2-1 victory over Sapmi in a CONIFA World Football Cup qualifier last year.

First Match at Lux Park

This fixture will be a significant one for the Kernow FA as it will be their first game at Lux Park, the home ground of Liskeard Athletic. Previous home matches were held at AFC St Austell, Bodmin Town, and Falmouth Town. The change of venue is seen as a step forward in the team’s development, with Kernow FA chairman Jason Heaton expressing excitement about the collaboration with Liskeard Athletic.

Jason Heaton commented, “It is an honour to welcome the Chagos BIOT team back to Cornwall after five years. Maintaining our relationship is a huge part of our development process. We feel a good alignment, with all the hard work that has been put in by Liskeard Athletic at Lux Park.”

A Return After Five Years

The Chagos Islands, officially known as the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), are returning to Cornwall almost five years after a memorable match where Kernow triumphed 10-3. During that game, Kernow striker Dan Jennings made headlines by scoring four goals.

Chagos Islands, based in Crawley, have represented the ‘Chagossian community in exile’ for over a decade. Their manager, Jimmy Ferrar, reflected on their last visit, “When I first took over Chagos I had not even had a training session. We arrived in Kernow and got a bit of a whooping. The boys were playing a poor level of football but we now have people playing senior football weekly. The team has evolved and developed, and I know the boys are looking very much at this game as a benchmark for how far we have truly come.”

Building International Relationships

Both teams have been active in the non-FIFA football scene, playing under the umbrella of CONIFA, the Confederation of Independent Football Associations. This match serves not only as a competitive fixture but also as an opportunity to strengthen international relationships and showcase the development of both teams.

Jimmy Ferrar also shared his appreciation for the continued partnership, saying, “I would like to thank Jason personally and the whole of Kernow for having us for this game. Jase is a friend and also a real top footballing gentleman. We look forward to the game and to catching up with everyone before and after.”

Stay Tuned for Details

While ticket details and the kick-off time are yet to be confirmed, fans are encouraged to follow the Kernow Football Alliance on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram for the latest updates. This historic rematch promises to be an exciting event for football fans and a testament to the growing connections in the world of non-FIFA football.
