Four More Players Sign New Contracts with Cornish Pirates
In a major boost for the Cornish Pirates, the club has announced that four more players have signed new contracts for the 2024/25 season.
This follows recent news of 10 other squad members committing to the team, showcasing a strong retention strategy by the club. The latest players to renew their contracts are Joe Elderkin, Alex Everett, Harry Hocking, and Bruce Houston.
Joe Elderkin: A Solid Midfield Performer
Exeter-born centre Joe Elderkin, aged 25, has made 68 appearances for the Cornish Pirates. Known for his dependable performance in the midfield, Joe’s rugby journey includes time with Exeter Chiefs under 18s/Academy, Singha 7s, Exeter Braves, and stints at Redruth, Plymouth Albion, and Cornwall. Joe’s solid background in rugby and consistent performance make him a key asset for the team.
Alex Everett: A Standout Backrower
Alex Everett, nearing the end of his second season with the Pirates, has been one of the standout performers for the club. At 27, Alex is on the verge of his 50th appearance for the Cornish Pirates, a milestone he might reach this Saturday. His rugby career began at The Judd School, followed by Cardiff University, Newport, and Cardiff RFC, before joining the Pirates. Alex’s exceptional play in the back row has made him a crucial player for the team.
Harry Hocking: Rising Star Hooker
Hooker Harry Hocking, at 22, has had an impressive season with the Cornish Pirates while dual registered with Exeter Chiefs. Starting his rugby career at St Ives and continuing his development at Mounts Bay Academy and Truro College, Harry joined Exeter Chiefs’ senior academy in 2020. He has scored three tries in four Championship games, showcasing his potential and effectiveness on the field.
Bruce Houston: Impressive Fly-Half
Antrim-born Bruce Houston, 24, joined the Cornish Pirates in October after a short-term deal at Ealing Trailfinders. Bruce has made a significant impact, scoring 116 points in 17 appearances. A former Ireland under 18s and under 19s player, Bruce has also played for Ulster ‘A’ in the Celtic Cup and made an appearance for Ulster against Leinster in the Pro14. His skill at fly-half has been a valuable addition to the team.
Coach Gavin Cattle’s Remarks
Joint head coach Gavin Cattle expressed his satisfaction with the retention of these promising players. “It is obviously really good that we are keeping such a promising group of players, who have signed new contracts for next season and have a lot of growth in them,” he said. He emphasised the importance of retention and the role these players will play in passing on their knowledge to newcomers, while also acknowledging the contributions of players who will be leaving.
This news underscores the Cornish Pirates’ commitment to building a strong and cohesive team for the upcoming season, ensuring continuity and growth within the squad.
