Pencarrow vs Holsworthy Match Report
In form Pencarrow hammer Holsworthy II’s in battle to stay up
by Dan Cocker
Pencarrow CC hosted Holsworthy CC II’s on Saturday and continued their impressive run of form, recording their third consecutive victory — and one of the most dominant performances seen at the Pencarrow cricket ground (PCG) in recent memory.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, Pencarrow started confidently. Openers laid the foundation with a mammoth first-wicket partnership, led by Mark Pennington, who notched up his first half-century of the season before departing for 54 with the score at 122-1. Jack Carter kept the momentum going with an aggressive 25, pushing the total to 166-2.
What followed was a breathtaking display of hitting from Tristan Jago, who joined his brother Isaac at the crease. Tristan smashed the Holsworthy bowlers to all parts of the ground, finishing unbeaten on 63 from just 27 balls (10×4, 1×6).
At the other end, Isaac Jago provided the backbone of the innings. After several near-misses in recent seasons with scores in the 40s and high 40s, he finally reached a well-deserved and emotional maiden league century. His unbeaten 101 (16×4) was a composed and classy knock, anchoring Pencarrow’s commanding total of 269-2.
After tea, Pencarrow were ruthless with the ball. Opening bowlers Tristan Jago (4-25) and Loic Pennington (4-22) tore through the Holsworthy top order, with Jack Carter taking a spectacular diving catch that will live long in the memory at the PCG.
The tail was swiftly cleaned up by Eddie Thomson (1-5) and young Harry Durnall (1-6), as Holsworthy were bowled out for just 60.
Captain Tristan Jago said “That was a real statement of intent victory in which everyone in the team stood up, and I couldn’t be prouder. We’ve had a tough season but the last few weeks have shown our intent to stay in the division. I haven’t been apart of such a winning margin before and to be able to contribute with both bat and ball always helps. A final word to my older brother Isaac who scored his maiden league century today it was an honour to share the moment with him. All eyes on Devon next Saturday as we look to make it four in a row against an in-form side”
Pencarrow ran out emphatic winners by 208 runs — a statement victory that lifts them 17 points clear of the relegation zone. With closest rivals Grampound not playing next weekend, every point will be vital as Pencarrow head to Dartmoor to face Buckland Monachorum, aiming to make it four wins in a row.
