Pencarrow on the cusp of safety after rampant home display in Cornish sunshine

Pencarrow continued their fine run of form on Saturday with a dominant performance in both bowling and batting that swept aside their Newquay opposition.

The Arrows lost the toss and, under clear blue skies on a hot summer’s day, Newquay chose to bat first on a firm wicket. The visitors began steadily, reaching 15 without loss after six overs. But the game turned dramatically in the seventh, when captain Tristan Jago (3-13) struck twice in six balls to remove both openers.

Newquay steadied briefly at 31-3 before the Pencarrow spinners took control. Jack Carter struck with his very first delivery and went on to produce a superb spell, finishing with 9 overs, 3 wickets for just 11 runs — an economy of only 1.22 per over. Carter was backed up brilliantly by spin partner Simon Clay, who tore through the tail with equally eye-catching figures of 3.4 overs, 4 wickets for 9 runs. Newquay were bundled out for 75 in 29.4 overs, handing Pencarrow the all-important five bonus points.

In reply, Pencarrow suffered an early setback when Mark Pennington chopped on for 4, but the in-form pair of Isaac Jago (38*) and Jack Carter (30*) ensured there were no further alarms, cruising to the target in just 13.3 overs.

The Arrows collected the maximum 20 points and are now all but safe in the division, their resurgence marked by four wins in their last five games. For relegation-threatened Grampound Road (9th) to escape, they would need maximum points from their remaining two fixtures — and even then, Pencarrow require only four more bonus points to guarantee survival.

Reflecting on the victory, captain Tristan Jago said:

“A top team performance today to secure the 20 points we desperately wanted. After a tough winter, conceding our first match and winning only one of our first 11 games, it’s a true testament to the players who stuck together, kept fighting, and have now won four of the past five. Nobody outside of us believed we could stay up — and we are so close. Looking ahead, if we keep this team together, add a few new recruits, I see no reason why we can’t push towards the top in 2026.”

Pencarrow could yet influence the promotion race as well. This Saturday they host tenants Wadebridge at the PCG, where victory for the visitors would all but seal their promotion. Meanwhile, nearest challengers Gorran (2nd) and Buckland Monachorum (3rd) face off as the season enters its climax.

Scorecard
Newquay 3’s 75ao (S. Clay 4-9, J. Carter 3-11, T. Jago 3-13)
Pencarrow 76-1 (I. Jago 38*, J. Carter 30*)

Result
Pencarrow 76-1 (20) beat Newquay 3’s 75ao (1) by 9 wickets
