Pirates Show Pre-Season Promise

Penzance & Newlyn 12 – Cornish All Blacks 10

Promoted as Champions of the Counties 1 Tribute Western West league at the end of last season, the Pirates Amateurs, registered now as Penzance & Newlyn, showed pre-season promise in this ‘friendly’ encounter hosted last Friday evening at Perranporth.

Ahead of life this season in Regional 2 South West, facing a higher-level league team who play in Regional 1 South West was a challenge for the Pirates, but in recording this narrow victory there was a good level of promise to be seen. Head coach Murray Westren, whose brother Ryan is Director of Rugby at Polson Bridge, was pleased with the effort of his squad. He commented:

“There were positives, as we looked for from such a match, and it was a good and pleasing evening overall. We were able to use a lot of players to give each important game time, plus there is nothing better than winning, which on the night was a worthy achievement. The lads showed considerable determination, and especially so in defence.”

Tries for the Pirates were scored by scrum halves Rhodri McAtee and Ben Durrant, with full-back Ben Wragg slotting one conversion.

The Penzance & Newlyn Pirates are next in action this coming Friday when they will play St. Ives away (ko 7.30pm).
