Pirates Face Tough Test: Can They Repeat December’s Thrashing at Coventry?
The Cornish Pirates return to action this Saturday, 3rd May, with a challenging trip to Coventry following a break from Championship fixtures last weekend. This highly anticipated 3rd versus 5th showdown promises to be fiercely contested as the season heads into its final stretch.
December’s Dominance Adds Extra Edge
The last meeting between the two sides saw the Pirates cruise to an emphatic 46-14 victory at the Mennaye Field in December. That result, which few could have predicted, will undoubtedly fuel Coventry’s desire to turn the tables this time around.
With Coventry seeking revenge, the Pirates know they will face a determined opponent on home turf.
Key Changes in the Line-Up
Team selection sees several adjustments, including the return of Will Trewin at full-back. Charlie McCaig also reclaims his spot at centre, lining up alongside Chester Ribbons. In the forwards, Sol Moody starts at hooker, with Charlie ‘Buster’ Rice partnering Alfie Bell in the second row. Josh King is named at wing forward.
Among the replacements is the familiar face of Jack Andrew, on loan from Camborne, adding depth to the bench.
Coach Joe Walsh Looks Ahead
Pirates coach Joe Walsh shared his thoughts ahead of the crucial clash:
“It was good to get a couple of days off last week to help reset and recover, as we now have five tough games on the bounce to the end of the season.”
“We have three home games, none of which will be easy, and two very difficult away fixtures against teams who will provide quality opposition, starting with Saturday at Coventry.”
“It is going to be important for us to prepare well and following our excellent result against them at home I am sure that has been a talking point in their camp in the build up to this weekend.”
“An emotional response is naturally likely, whilst knowing what we are capable of we need to perform again by sticking to process, make sure our flow of energy is right, and take our opportunities when they arise.”
