Pirates Ease to Victory

Playing Redruth II away in Counties 1 Tribute Western West, the Pirates eased to a comfortable 29-5 points victory.

In a dominant first half wing Sam Cahill open the scoring for the league leaders in the eighth minute, when running with pace and determination he forced his way over the line for a try at the Recreation Ground’s legendary Hellfire corner. Full-back Ben Wragg added the extra two points with a well struck conversion.

The Reds were expected to be difficult opponents to overcome, and plucky they were. However, the Pirates ran in two more tries through scrum half Sam Carter and centre Harris Eddy, both of which Wragg converted, before Redruth lock forward Louie Fowler-Beaton’s try made it 5-21 at the break.

Into the second half, it was expected several more scores would be likely, but as it worked out this proved not to be the case. There would be two only. Wragg was successful with one penalty attempt, and man of the match hooker Eli Williams added to his try tally this season when he was driven over the line for a final bonus providing unconverted score.

Speaking post-match, Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren said:

“We were expecting a tough examination at Redruth, as is all but inevitably the case, though we managed to perform well enough in the first forty when we built up a good lead.

After the interval we were less clinical, it perhaps a case of taking our foot off the pedal, which is something we need to avoid in forthcoming matches.”
