Truro City Appoints John Askey As First Team Manager in Multi-Year Deal: A New Chapter Unfolds
Truro City Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Askey as their new first team manager on a multi-year contract.
Askey, 59, brings extensive managerial experience from both the English Football League and the top two tiers of National League football to his new role.
A Storied Career
Hailing from Stoke-on-Trent, John Askey is no stranger to football. His impressive playing career at Macclesfield Town saw him make 679 appearances, earning him the title of the club’s all-time leading appearance maker. After retiring from playing in 2003, Askey transitioned into management, taking charge of Macclesfield Town later that year. Though Brian Horton succeeded him in 2004, Askey remained with the club in various coaching roles before reassuming the managerial position nine years later.

Success Against the Odds
Despite financial constraints, Askey led Macclesfield Town back to the Football League in 2018. This achievement earned him a move to League One side Shrewsbury Town. Following his time at Shrewsbury, Askey managed Port Vale, the club where he began his career, before a successful stint at York City, where he secured promotion to the National League from National League North. Most recently, he was in charge of Hartlepool United.
New Challenges at Truro City
Askey expressed his excitement about the new opportunity at Truro City, particularly as the club prepares to move to a new ground. Speaking to trurocity.co.uk, he stated, “It is exciting times although it will be a challenge, but I am looking forward to the project ahead. We are hoping that everyone in Cornwall can get behind us and we can be successful.”
He emphasized the importance of community support and the ambition to build on the club’s recent successes. “We want conviction and as long the supporters see the players having a go for them, that is all we can expect. If you do that as a player, along with being strong, organised and fit, there is no reason why we can’t compete.”
Support from Stewart Yetton
Assisting Askey will be Stewart Yetton, who remains in a similar role to previous campaigns. Yetton, a club legend and Truro City’s all-time leading goalscorer, is enthusiastic about the future. “Continuity is key and hopefully I can be an important part of John coming in by helping him, supporting him and us kicking on next season on the pitch,” he said.
Club Vision
Alex Black, City’s football consultant, highlighted Askey’s blend of experience and knowledge as critical for the club’s future. “John is someone that can bring a clear vision, longevity and a structure for the club moving forward,” Black said. He praised Askey’s ability to achieve success even under challenging conditions, referencing his promotion achievements with both York City and Macclesfield Town.
Askey’s appointment marks a significant step for Truro City as they look to inspire fans and build a strong, competitive team. With a new ground and renewed energy, the club is hopeful for a successful 2024-25 campaign under Askey’s leadership.
