Wellington 0 – Penzance & Newlyn 52

Travelling to the Athletic Ground at Wellington on Saturday, Penzance & Newlyn negotiated Storm Amy to record this convincing win in Tribute Regional 2 SW.

Yellow-carded at St. Ives in a pre-season friendly, the Pirates welcomed back available again skipper Stan Somers for what was his first league game of the season. Also featuring was man of the match hooker Kenny Jones, who duly celebrated his appearance by scoring a hat-trick, and selected at scrum half was recent stand-in captain Oscar Marr, who previously this season has worn the ‘10’ shirt.

Scoring four first half tries the Pirates led 20-0 at the break, whilst in the second forty they added four more, three of which were converted by full-back Ben Wragg, who also slotted two successful penalty kicks to record an impressive 22 personal points tally.

Commenting after the game, Penzance & Newlyn’s head coach Murray Westren said:

“Credit to the lads who didn’t have it all their own way but played some very good rugby in the difficult conditions to ultimately record a convincing victory.”
