Drivers Caught Speeding Past Mithian School During Morning Drop Off
Drivers were found speeding past Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team checks outside Mithian School during the morning drop off, despite illuminated 20mph signs being in operation.
The checks took place this morning, Friday 6th February 2026, after repairs were arranged to the variable speed limit signs following discussions with Cornwall Council.
Speed checks during school drop off
Officers attended the site to confirm the signs were lighting up correctly at the appropriate time and to monitor traffic speeds as children were arriving at school.
During the checks, 30 drivers were detected travelling above the 20mph speed limit. One driver was recorded travelling at 40mph past the school during the drop off period.
The Road Safety Team said the level of non compliance was disappointing, particularly given the additional warning provided by the illuminated signs.
Further visits planned
The team confirmed they will be returning in the near future and will continue to attend regularly to help ensure vehicle speeds reduce while children are at risk.
The head teacher at Mithian School personally thanked officers for attending and carrying out the checks.
