Speed Enforcement Planned Outside Mithian Primary School Put on Hold After Sign Fault

Speed enforcement due to begin outside Mithian Primary School has been temporarily delayed after police discovered a fault with the variable speed limit signs.

Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team announced 21 hours ago that speed detection activity would soon be starting in Mithian, outside the primary school. Enforcement was planned for the 20mph variable speed section and would only take place during school pick-up and drop-off times, when the illuminated 20mph signs are switched on.

Police said they were attending the location following concerns raised by parents and after consultation with the school’s headteacher. They highlighted that there is no footway outside the school and that limited parking means many children and parents walk to and from the site. Officers also confirmed they had worked with Cornwall Council to make sure signage was clearly visible, foliage had been cleared and the variable speed signs were fully functional.

However, in an update posted around four hours ago, the Road Safety Team said enforcement could not go ahead as planned.

Police attended the school this morning to monitor speeds during drop-off, but checks found that the variable speed limit illuminated signs were not working correctly. Officers said they will not carry out enforcement if signage does not provide adequate warning to drivers, and as a result, speeds were not monitored outside the school today.

The team confirmed they are now in contact with Cornwall Council about the issue and will arrange for the signs to be repaired. Once this has been done, officers said they will return to the location.

Police reminded drivers that the 20mph speed limit still applies during school pick-up and drop-off times when the signs are illuminated, regardless of enforcement activity.
